2016: This one's for the girls

2016 might have brought tragedies across the globe but here at Sambhali – with thanks to all of your support and donations – we’ve made it a great year for women and girls in Rajasthan.
In 2016 alone, we’ve supported 184 women who’ve called our SOS hotline, given 45 women self defence training and spread the word to 3,277 children, teachers and parents about sexual abuse through the No Bad Touch project. But we didn’t stop there.

A Home For Pooja, Thanks to your donations!
A hugely successful crowd-funded project took place: A Home for Pooja. Before Sambhali’s campaign, Pooja lived on the side of a busy road with her parents. She would come to our girl’s centre in the mornings but spend her afternoons picking up rubbish in the city until the end of the day, only to return to the roadside hut where she was at risk of child prostitution. Your generous donations in 2016 mean that Pooja lives in a safe and happy environment, surrounded by other girls who are studying at school and now have bright futures ahead of them.
2016 was also a fantastic year for our Graduate Sewing Centre. This year we’ve given 105 Dalit women the chance to lead an independent and sustainable future, far away from the demeaning and unimaginable hardships that they face in society. By providing women with the space, facilities and a positive environment where they’re free to develop and sell their own ideas and designs, we’ve given our students the chance to progress socially and economically. However, the opportunities for these women won’t stop after graduation. At her ceremony, we will give each woman a sewing machine to ensure that she can continue to support herself financially, but we need your help!
We’re running a crowd-funded campaign so that each woman can guarantee not only her, but her entire family a better future. With one sewing machine costing just €62, we’re determined to raise enough for our biggest class of graduates ever! With the difference we’ve made in 2016 we’re sure that we can achieve our goal – please click here to donate.

2016 has been a fantastic year for Sambhali, but in 2017 we’re going do better. Since being granted the honour of a consultative status with the UN Economic and Social Council, we’re pushing further for the rights of women and girls of Rajasthan, where “the maintenance of traditional gender roles [...] continues to position women unequally to men”. This quote is drawn from our statement that will be read at the Commission on the Status of Women in March 2017, where we’ll be spreading the word of Sambhali across the globe.

There’s so much more to come from us in 2017 – we’ll be keeping you updated on our successes in the New Year! Thanks for standing with us in the fight for women’s rights in 2016, we couldn’t have done it without you.

Celebrating our 10 Year Anniversary with the women and girls!
